Who ya gonna call???

When our beloved midwives were taken from us last August, Gaby did a google search on “CNMs fired” and found 4 other locations where folks had experienced the same kind of loss. We tried reaching out to those communities to no avail. In the months that followed, we realized that our own community had suffered the loss of a midwifery practice in the 1990s as well! So, Sylvia did some research and found an insane number of locations where midwives had been bullied out of their practice. She made a map with the locations she found:

No one at the American College of Nurse Midwives is keeping track of this information! We would have loved to be able to reach out to other families who had experienced the firing of their midwife to ask advice, find out what they did to affect change. But now we see that we must be that someone. To that end, we have made a new video:

Please forward this on to anyone you know who has suffered the loss of their care provider. We feel strongly that it is time for all mothers to stand up to the physicians and hospitals who restrict access to midwives and anyone who practices the Midwives Model of Care. Midwives have lower c-section rates, lower rates of interventions. In short, better outcomes. And they cost less to employ. In other words, midwives make far less money than physicians for private practices and for hospitals.

The c-section rate in this country has just gone up for the 12th straight year.
Amnesty International has declared maternity care in the US a human rights issue.
The United States ranks 41st in the world in maternal mortality – it is safer to have your baby in 40 other countries.

It is time for change.
It is time for a revolution.
