We have more midwives (and not just in the hospital.)
Women seeking to give birth at home now have an option with homebirth practice Midwifery Services.   Pamela Irby joins SEAHEC and is available to see patients immediately.

BIG NEWS!!!
December, 2009

On Monday December 7th, Kirsti Kreutzer, WMM? President, took a beautiful notebook filled with your letters and covered in a photo collage of Where's My Midwife? supporters and dropped it off at the Department of OB/GYN meeting.

The next day, we received a phone call informing us that they had researched the policy and found that it was, in fact, “antiquated.” The department will vote in a new policy at their next meeting in February!

Congratulations! We have accomplished our first major goal, and we could not have done it without your commitment to the cause. But our work is not complete – now we must begin the task of educating the obstetricians in town about why we need midwives. We will also begin actively seeking out physicians who might consider setting up a practice here supporting midwives.

The Star News reported on our success on December 17th with front page news!
New Hanover Regional Medical Center eases midwife policy.

And the following day the Greater Wilmington Business Journal reported the story!
Hospital loosens rule on midwives

An opinion piece was later published in the Star News.  This is a fantastic article:
NHRMC delivers on midwife policy

We need Volunteers!
We need assistance in different areas so that we can be as effective as possible in advocating for midwifery and bringing about change. We are looking for volunteers to join each of the subcommittees listed below. If you are interested in joining a subcommittee, please email info@wheresmymidwife.org.

SUBCOMMITTEES

Events (3-5 people)
Leaders: Anna and Kirsti

Help plan upcoming events. This group will take our ideas and run with them. Plan flashmobs and other events; food, budgets, how to market the events and delegate marketing to our Facebook/Bloggers and graphic design team.

What you’ll bring to the table:

·          Event planning experience and creativity

Internet       (5-7 people)

Leaders: Candice and Gaby

Help motivate our members and keep them informed by keeping up with the Facebook group: writing on the wall about what’s going on to keep members informed, as well as keeping up a conversation going to keep members interested and coming back for more. This group will also post on several blogs: The Where’s My Midwife Blog, Mothering.com, My Best Birth Blog, about our events and what’s going on with WMM?

What you’ll bring to the table:

·          Ability to work from home or office

·          This is a great position for someone who can’t always make it to meetings/events.

Networking/Research     (3 people)
Leader: Gaby

This is not the first time a community has lost its midwives! Look into where this has happened in the past, and network with midwife-supporting groups from those communities to find out how they responded, and how they were successful in getting community support/fundraising/getting their midwives back.

What you’ll bring to the table:

·          A desire to reach out to strangers by phone and/or email

Education/Outreach        (2 people)

Leader: Ryanna

This group will come up with ways to reach out to the community and educate the public about midwifery and the midwifery model of care. This group will work closely with the other teams to implement their ideas.

What you’ll bring to the table:

·          a passion for educating others about midwifery care and natural childbirth
